Other than the natural products like granite, stone, or the fired products like ceramic or porcelain (tile), you will have the man-made products that are derived from plastics. Those products are cultured marble/solid surface, laminates, and coatings. Resurfacing is a coating.
The man-made plastic product are similar in composition but different in construction. Plastics are not a solid so there must be something involved to give structural stability;
LAMINATES are a paper based product that has had resin impregnated and layered then pressed together to make a sheet of material.
SOLID SURFACE products are cast in to a form to generate a shape. Fillers composed of minerals or fiberglass hold the form.
COATINGS cover an existing stucture. This is resurfacing.
The performance of the man-made options are similar. There are advantages and disadvantages to each that are slight and debateable but in normal use are equal. The performance limitations are due to the similar plastic component that gives the stain, chemical and heat resistances.
The comparisons to various countertop materials is in the chart shown below. There is a trade-off with certain performance criteria to review when considering your investment options. There is also the price and repairability aspects to consider. If your decision is based on value, which is price and performance combined, you will see that resurfacing with the Ace coating performs the same or better than the most popular options (laminate and solid surface) but is superior in the renewability (making repairs) while being the least cost option. The winner in this comparison is resurfacing with the Ace coating.
